V8 Supercars Excursion

Students immersed themselves in Maths and Science at the V8 Supercars...and watched a few cars.

Over 100 Belmore students from Years 7 to 12 were given a treat to attend an excursion to the V8 Supercars at Homebush on Friday. Students on Track, an event run by V8 Supercars, was an incredible opportunity for students to see how the things learnt in class translate to life on and around the race track.

Even though the day started off with catching two trains, students were nevertheless engrossed the minute they arrived. Students saw practical applications of maths, physical education, science and engineering in action at a motorsport event. Students also got up close and personal with the excitement of the Team Transporters and the action of the garages, including the thrills of real V8 Supercar practice sessions and on track entertainment.

Students watched actual V8 Supercar racing from as close as they could get, watching cars speed by - some supercars, such as the Honda, can reach speeds of up to 300km/h. Students also watched presentations during the day, aimed at linking the work studied at school to practical applications at the event.

Students were enlightened about the importance of race car driver's protective gear and the fact they wear three different seat belts for safety. Students also watched a mock scenario of oil burning on a kitchen stove and learnt why you never throw water on a kitchen stove fire, a practical application that could definitely prevent future accidents if they occur. Finally, students watched a search and rescue mock of a car accident where passengers were in danger. Fire-fighters went through the different steps of what they do in these situations and used and explained the different tools they utilise such as the 'jaws of life' and the importance of not moving passengers quickly due to possible neck/spinal injuries. Students also received some valuable advice on the importance keeping to the speed limit and not texting while driving. Finally, students were presented with some sobering statistics:

  • the person next to you will have some kind of accident in their lifetime
  • one person sitting in your row will have a serious motor vehicle accident
  • one person in each column will die because of a motor vehicle accident

Some really enlightening statistics which definitely moved our students.

Students experienced all the different stalls and race cars, as well as taking photos. Stalls included Red Bull, Norton and Holden to name a few. There was also the chance to do some race car driving simulations and some of the boys were passengers in what was a roller coaster made for cars - amazing!

Little Athletics also held a stall on the day where students could test how fast they are. Congratulations to Kane Maslow, who was the fastest student, clocking in at 36 km/h!

The day was successful and students loved every bit - student returned back to school tired, happy and loaded with a lot of free stuff.

Thanks V8 Supercars!
