26 Jun 2014
Congratulations to Glenn Smith and our Year 7 Debating Team who had their first debate and first victory!
On 26 June the newly formed Year 7 debating team had their first experience of inter school debating defeating a very good team from Ashfield Boys High. The team consisted of Joshua U as first speaker, Adurrahman M second, Ibrahim A as third and Omar A as fourth speaker. They were ably assisted by Ibrahim T who helped with preparation and as chair and timekeeper of the debate.
The team came together with very short notice with all five boys being successful in their audition for a place. The topic of the debate was that education should be free for all, and the Belmore Boys argued for the affirmative. Both sides acquitted themselves well presenting strong arguments and both teams making robust rebuttals as the arguments unfolded.
The Belmore boys won out in the end due to their superior grasp of the topic, their consistent argument throughout stage of the debate and through the clear and concise manner in which they spoke. The Ashfield boys were equally impressive and it was an extremely tight decision which came down on the side of the team that stayed focussed on the topic.
Well done Year 7 boys, we look forward to the next round.
